Prishtina / Kosovo, October 2020. Jeton Neziraj's new play "The Return of Karl May", a co-production between Berlin’s Volksbühne, Kosovo's Qendra Multimedia and the National Theatre of Kosovo, was the first play to premiere in Prishtina after theatres were allowed to reopen earlier this month. The play's journey to the stage has not been straightforward, though that’s true of most productions this year. It is was originally intended to premiere in Berlin in May, as part of the Volksbühne's PostWest Festival, a transcultural theatre festival intended to bring together artists from ten countries in eastern Europe in order to interrogate what it means to be 'Eastern European' as well as, according to curator Alina Aleshchenko, to create a space for "cooperation and exchange" between theatre makers from these countries.

Prishtina / Kosovo, Oktober 2020. Jeton Nezirajs neues Stück "Die Rückkehr von Karl May", eine Koproduktion der Berliner Volksbühne, der Qendra Multimedia Kosovo und des Nationaltheaters des Kosovo, war das erste Stück, das in Prishtina uraufgeführt wurde, nachdem die Theater Anfang des Monats wiedereröffnet werden konnten. Der Weg des Stücks auf die Bühne war nicht einfach, was für die meisten Produktionen dieses Jahres gilt. Ursprünglich sollte es im Mai in Berlin uraufgeführt werden, und zwar im Rahmen von PostWest in der Berliner Volksbühne, einem transkulturellen Theaterfestival, das Künstler*innen aus zehn osteuropäischen Ländern zusammenbringen wollte. Fragestellung des Festival war: was bedeutet es, "osteuropäisch" zu sein. Darüber hinaus wollte PostWest einen Raum für "Zusammenarbeit und Austausch" zwischen Theatermachern aus diesen Ländern schaffen, so die Kuratorin Alina Aleshchenko.
